The Nashville Police + Public Safety Alliance (Alliance) today revealed a new, resident-friendly Public Safety Data Dashboard designed to provide Nashvillians a powerful new tool to be better informed and engage in public safety efforts. This new tool is intended to complement and bring to life the robust information the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD) already provides publicly.
The Alliance’s Public Safety Data Dashboard, created using MNPD data and developed in partnership with The Sycamore Institute, provides users with a detailed view of crime data by neighborhood. For example, a user can track auto theft rates over time in their neighborhood and compare those figures to auto thefts in Nashville overall or in another specific neighborhood during the same period. This level of detail aligns with the Alliance’s goal to elevate the conversation about public safety in Nashville.
“We believe that public safety is a community responsibility. We want everyone to have the necessary data to be fully informed,” said CEO Pat Shea. “Our hope is that by making that data more accessible and easier to understand, it will help Nashville residents gain a clearer picture of what’s happening in their city and their neighborhoods. We also hope that it will provide policymakers with an additional resource to facilitate more in-depth community conversations and make more informed decisions. Our goal is to create a more engaged community working together on public safety in partnership with MNPD.”
The Alliance, working with The Sycamore Institute, is enhancing existing MNPD data by aggregating it by neighborhood (matched with the Imagine Nashville neighborhoods) and adds new tools to visualize crime trends, make comparisons, and more.
“The Alliance’s new Public Safety Data Dashboard is an exciting step forward because it takes complex crime data and makes it clear, accessible, and actionable for the whole community,” said Halim Genus, VP of Partnerships and Programs for the Alliance. “This tool is about more than numbers; it’s about building trust and helping Nashville work together in building safer neighborhoods."
The Public Safety Data Dashboard focuses on annual, quarterly, and monthly count and proportion data for each of the following crime types:
● Property crimes
● Violent crimes
● Aggravated assault
● Auto theft
● Commercial burglary
● Commercial robbery
● Homicide
● Larceny
● Residential burglary
● Street robbery
The Public Safety Data Dashboard will be updated regularly moving forward to ensure it always reflects the latest available statistics.
The Alliance’s Public Safety Data Dashboard will also include a link to MNPD’s dashboard, which includes a bevy of additional information, including a new interactive stolen firearms map, gun-related crime statistics, vehicle crash maps, gunshot injury maps, use of force data, and more.
“We are proud of our police department for prioritizing the transparent sharing of information with the public,” said Dan Hogan, the Police + Public Safety Alliance Board of Directors. “Not all cities have the level of public information available that we do. Our hope is that the Alliance’s Public Safety Data Dashboard will bring some of that data to life in new and helpful ways.”
The Public Safety Data Dashboard will be available in Spanish by the end of the year.
